Frequently Asked Questions & Bits of Information
The first question i would like to answer is:Why choose the path of a Hunter? ~ Here are some Pro’s and Cons.
Pro's
*Range of Fire*
Archers have the longest horizontal range in the game. They are the only class able to shoot further than the screen limits. Also can touch area’s behind them as well as above and below. Being ranged means you can stand back and let fly arrows without the need for HP potions.
*Accuracy*
Archers posses the highest accuracy in the game. High accuracy means you can train at monsters higher lvl than most classes. Only if a monster is several times stronger than you will you fail to hit it. This also means you can damage bosses much earlier than other class types
*Mob Friendly*
Archers receive their first mob skill at lvl 30. This allows them to hit up to 6 monsters in a single shot. Following the advance to 3rd Job and 4th Job You can possibly have over 4 different Mob attack skills.
*High Long Range Damage*
With the addition of Critical damage, Archers become one of the highest damaging characters. Although Crossbows hits harder than Bows this comes at the price of speed.
*Flashy Skills*
Archers get some of the best eye catching skills in the game, With so many mob skills and flying birds… It won’t take much effort to make your fellow Maplers look in awe at your amazing power.
Cons
*Durability*
Unfortunately Archers have very low HP. This becomes apparent at the higher lvls when monsters can kill you in 1-2 hits. Unless you put points into HP (sacrificing damage) or use methods which cost real money. But thankfully Archers are ranged, if you can master your skills then you should be able to avoid getting hit by the monsters you face the majority of the time.
*Movement*
Unlike our ranged partners “Rogue” We cannot Jump + Shoot at the same time without using skill fully timed key presses on our keyboard. Also we do not get a movement related skill until 3rd Job. Although there are Bows and other Equipments that can help you along the way with speed/jump boosts.
*Low Close Range Damage*
Until you reach lvl 70, fighting monsters up close can be a real challenge...even with Power Knock Back the damage dealt is not all that good. Try to stay far away.
RULE OF STR!
FOR HUNTERS: STR = LVL + 5
FOR CROSSBOWERS: STR = LVL
~~~Lvl 1-10~~~
With the dice system now gone. Lvl 1-10 should be easy. Just follow the quests and trials given to you buy Maple Island NPC’s and you will more than likely be lvl 10 by the time you reach Henesys of Victoria Island. Be sure to pick up the Relaxer chair from one of the quests.
The Basics of a Bowman
[R6] ~~~Lvl 10-30~~~ [R6]
SKILLS
Blessing of the Amazon - Increases Accuracy
A passive skill which gives the archer +1 Accuracy for every point put into the skill. Can be considered useless due to archers already having the most accuracy in the game thanks to our main stat being DEX. 3 Points required in this skill to unlock Eye of the Amazon
Eye of The Amazon - Increases Maximum Range of Attack
A must have skill which allows you to have even more horizontal range than an Assassin. Max this before lvl 30.
Critical Shot - Allows you to perform a critical attack at a certain success rate.
Another must have skill. Critical shot adds more damage to you’re attack and its free. When maxed adds 100% damage to the current attack multiplier. This skill makes an Archers damage very unstable, until the early lvl 30’s when you can max “Bow Mastery”
Double Shot - Shoot 2 arrows at once to attack a single enemy.
Compared to Arrow Blow, this skill shoots 2 arrows instead of 1. This means the Critical rate is calculated 2 times in a single shot, allowing for higher maximum damage than its fellow counterpart
Arrow Blow - shoots a single powerful arrow to attack the enemy
One shot ~ One chance for critical. But the base damage is higher than Double shot. So expect to see higher numbers if you plan to max this. Unfortunately the single high number does not tend to add up to both of Double Shot numbers put together. Useful skill for monster knock back only. Very limited. 1 Point required in this skill to unlock Double Shot
Focus - Increases Accuracy and Avoid
Similar to blessing in a sense that it adds accuracy, but it also adds Avoid so instead of just getting 1 Accuracy per point you get 1 Accuracy + 1 Avoid. Comes at a cost of having to recast. Most Archers choose this over Blessing.
SKILL BUILD
Most of the 1st Job skill builds look similar to each other. Do not feel the need to strictly follow the build I chose. Skill builds are NOT set in stone…just guidelines. Remember it is your character. Athena gives you a beginners bow + arrows, so no need to spend on that
The most common build that most new Archers agree on. This build is the biggest money saver.
1 Arrow Blow
3 Blessing of The Amazon
8 Eye of The Amazon
20 Critical Shot
20 Double Shot
9 Focus
This is the build I chose to follow as it gets all the essentials and as an unfunded archer I could not afford MP potions for Double Shot so early on. As you lvl it will look like this.
10 - 1 Arrow Blow
11 - 3 Blessing of The Amazon
12 - 3 Eye of The Amazon
13 - 6 Eye of The Amazon
14 - 8 Eye of The Amazon(Max)/1 Critical Shot
15 - 4 Critical Shot
16 - 7 Critical Shot
17 - 10 Critical Shot
18 - 13 Critical Shot
19 - 16 Critical Shot
20 - 19 Critical Shot
21 - 20 Critical Shot(Max)/2 Double Shot
22 - 5 Double Shot
23 - 8 Double Shot
24 - 11 Double Shot
25 - 14 Double Shot
26 - 17 Double Shot
27 - 20 Double Shot(Max)
28 - 3 Focus
29 - 6 Focus
30 - 9 Focus
Some people decide to skip Focus at the end and replace with either Blessing of the Amazon or get 10 points into Arrow Blow. But I recommend you stick to the one mapped out above. If you are funded by another character then I suggest swapping Eye of the Amazon with Double Shot and Critical shot.
Whitebottoms & SnowShoes (25-30)
There are 2 nice options for shoes in the early stages of the game. Both of these shoe types should last you until lvl 50+ atleast, So are a worthy investement
1 option is to go for Snowshoes, these are 7 slots and have grip at el nath also, but beware you cannot jumpshoot properly with them. Rich players could find/scroll a
high stat pair.
Your second and less costly option is to get whitebottoms. You can find these in Henesys, they add +3 Speed clean with 5 slots. If you have a couple hundred k mesos you can get some 100% speed shoes for a nice little speed boost in the early game
TIPS FOR LVL 10-30
If you are new to the game and lack mesos, Try not to use a lot of skills like Arrow Blow or Double Shot, these cost Mp. Mp potions are quite pricey and without Mastery in 2nd Job the damage gain can be insignificant at times. Normal Attack button should do nicely
Feel free to equip both crossbows and bows. Getting experience using both could alter your views and change your path during second job for the weapon you liked better during the first job. Lvl 10-30 is all about getting a feel for bowmen and teaching you how to attack from a distance using your new weapon.
The best tip I can give to new archers is to have fun. Don’t listen to the players that put you down or defame you. Being an archer is all about fun. At the start of the game we are the weakest of all classes. As the game progresses we continue to grow stronger. The flashy skills and ability to control and de-mobilize monsters at will is a unique ability that will allow the fun to continue at later stages in the game.
If your lacking in mesos, skip a lvl set of armour. When I was lvl 20. I had couple thousand mesos. Enough for maybe a bow and some arrows but that is as far as my mesos reached. If a certain set of armour is too pricey skip it and save up for the next tier. The most important thing is that you can afford arrows. If you lack the mesos to buy arrows, ask around as there is always players willing to offload the arrows they picked up from killing monsters.
If someone is killing monsters before you get the chance to kill it yourself. Ask them politely if they are willing to party with you. If they persist change to a new area or channel. If this doesn’t work… Go try your luck at the many Party Quests available within Maple story Europe. Henesys Party Quest and Kerning City Party Quest are very popular among the lvls 10-30.
HUNTER OR CROSSBOW?
Now that you have reached lvl 30 you are ready to advance to either Hunter or Crossbow. The biggest challenge is deciding which path to choose. The key to deciding is Speed vs. Power. Hunters shoot faster and Crossbowman shoot more powerful. Both end up doing around the same damage with all is considered so it does not really matter during the stage of 2nd Job. 3rd Job they start to spread more apart. During Hunter/Crossbowman the 1 skill needs to be considered
Hunters get Arrow Bomb ~ A skill which does 60% Damage to the 1st monster and 130% Splash damage to the other 5. This skill hit’s the Area all around the first monster, be it vertical or horizontal. So you can use the skill to hit 2 platforms, 3 platforms or even the monster behind you. This Skill when maxed has a 60% chance of stunning the monster. A godsend for hunters
Here is an example of Arrow Bomb being used to hit more than 1 platform
Crossbowmen get Iron Arrow ~ Like Arrow bomb this can hit 6 monsters, except this skill does not splash. Instead it goes through the monster in a horizontal line hitting any 5 monsters behind. Designed mainly for flat maps or long platforms. Opposite of Arrow Bomb, this skill hit’s the 1st monster with the highest damage % and gradually gets lower each monster it goes through. Although it doesn’t stun, Crossbowmen get the option to freeze monsters in 3rd job.
Here is an example of Iron Arrow going through monsters 1 by 1
The Way of The Hunter
[R7]~~~Lvls 30-70~~~ [R7]
SKILLS
Now that you are a Hunter you have a brand new selection of incredible skills to choose from. So lets cover them.
Bow Mastery - Increases the Mastery of Bow users.
What is this? Well, Mastery increases the minimum damage of your attacks. So you will no longer be hitting those Critical 1’s. Not only does it increase your minimum damage. This also adds Accuracy to your character. The accuracy will only have an effect on Bow skills. This should be your first priority. You will want to max this skill to unlock a 4th Job skill at lvl 120 called Bow Expertise…which takes this skill 1 step further.
Final Attack - Another Arrow will attack in quick succession after your previous skill at a certain activation %.
This skill has its advantages and disadvantages. This skill only works with 1st or 2nd Job arrow skills. Double Shot, Arrow Blow and Arrow Bomb are the only 3 skills this works with. Basically when you shoot Double shot.. There is a chance of another very high damage arrow being released straight after at a cost of no MP. Sounds great doesn’t it? Well it is. But it can also slow you down. Since it can activate when there is not even a monster still in the area. The skill can help the new unfunded archer to reach a higher lvl by doing more damage with less mp. This skill does not activate with lvl 70+ skills. Which in turn leads most archers to skip this skill and put points elsewhere.
Bow Booster - Speeds up the firing rate of you’re Bow
At first not very useful due to the low time limit. Once you start getting more points into it. This skill becomes a very useful buff. Tends to be used in succession with Soul Arrow and Focus. Needs 5 points into it to unlock Soul Arrow. In most cases this is not to be maxed until the late Hunter lvls.
Soul Arrow - Temporarily allows you to shoot arrows without using real arrows.
Free Arrows. The skill every archer loves because it allows you to never need to spend another meso on buying arrows. When the buff runs out, just recast. Try to get some points into this after maxing Mastery. 3-6 points is a good starting position. Is not maxed until the late Hunter lvls along with Bow Booster. I strongly suggest getting some points into it around lvl 40
Power Knock back - Allows you to hit up to 6 monsters with a chance of knocking them back.
A good skill for when you are in tight positions. Also a fun skill, this skill works similar to slash blast from warriors. Does not always knock back though. But at least it is better than the normal bow whacking. This skill is not passive and costs mp to use. Currently there is a debate between this and Final Attack.
Arrow Bomb - Exploding arrow which hits up to 6 monsters
Ahh the Hunter’s very own unique attack. This wonderful skill is what made me choose this path. Very high damage and a chance to stun 6 monsters with 1 arrow. Once it hit’s a monster all monsters within the “Area” of the first monster will be damaged and possibly stunned by this skill. This skill is eye candy to new hunters and to all the other classes. A very underestimated skill. Overpowers Double Shot on monsters 3 or more.
This Third build is just like the first. But instead of maxing power knock back and focus you use the 30 points to max Final Attack instead. I don’t think it needs a separate table but if you would like to see one I can edit at a later stage.
It would go something like this
Bow Mastery - 20
Arrow Bomb - 30
Bow Booster - 20
Soul Arrow - 20
Power Knock back - 0
Final Attack - 30
Focus - 9 (9 from first job)
+ 1 Point for anything you want.
Tips for Hunters
Now that you have a little more income, you may be tempted to try your hand at scrolling. I advise against this as the damage increase at these lvls do not make a huge difference, also the equipments you scroll will be replaced at a later lvl. So all your hard work will be sold off eventually. With prices dropping all the time in Maple story Europe this is not a good idea. At lvl 50+ Scroll with 100%. Find an Olympus and head over to the Orbis Tower scroll seller. She sells 100% Bow attack scrolls which add +1 Attack per scroll. Giving you a Bow with 7 more attack for less than 500,000 Mesos. Also it is a good idea to scroll the lvl 50+ Overalls with 100% Dex to give you an easy 15 dex. There is no need to use more expensive scrolls while in Hunter.
Use Arrow Bomb effectively. Finding the perfect map for Arrow Bomb can speed up your training. Maps with platforms works well as this can cause you to hit more than 1 Platform.
Get yourself an Icarus(2) Cape for an easy +10 speed. Combined with the Speed Pill sold in Ludibrium you can get + 20 speed, that is half of maximum speed. This will allow for faster training. Also if you have the mesos, buy some attack boost pills too.
Get a good guild. Find a guild which will assist you in your lvls. A similar lvl guild that can do Party Quest and help you out can be a lot more effective than joining a High lvl guild where you are left to train solo.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO PARTY QUEST FROM LVL 10 TO LVL 85
Lvl10+ Henesys PQ (Gets less useful around lvl 22)
Lvl 21-30 Kerning PQ or Ariant PQ
Lvl 30-50 Carnival PQ
Lvl 35-50 Ludi PQ
Lvl 50 - 71 Orbis PQ
71 - 85 - Magatia PQ (Romeo and Juliet)
Also Amoria PQ But this is not so good for EXP
CAPPING YOUR STR
Now that you are reaching the end of your Hunter and about to adventure into the Path of the Ranger. It would be wise to start thinking about leaving your STR at a certain lvl. With the new Zakum Helmets and STR boosting equips from the higher lvls. Having excess STR means less DEX…which in turn means less damage. Popular stopping points for the average archer is 70, 75 or 80. Low STR archers stop at 60-70, But since we do not have the equipments to deal with this properly in Maple story Europe it is best to stick to the average stopping points. Think about which lvl of Bow you want to continue to use for the rest of the game Arund/Metus/Nisrok/DragonBow are the main 4 favourites.
THE PATH OF THE RANGER
[R8]~~~lvl 70-120~~~ [R8]
So now that you are lvl 70, you are relieved and excited about the new skills…and you should be. Because this game just got 10x easier for you. You can still do Orbis PQ for 1 more lvl. So go show off you new skill and make people envy you, you deserve it for getting this far.
SKILLS
Lets start off with the skills
Thrust - Passive Skill which increases your movement speed
A skill some people like and some people hate, some archers feel since they can stand and snipe from platforms that movement speed is useless. In some cases this is true. Other archers argue that we move all though the characters maple life. Thus movement speed is essential. This is also true. When mounts do appear in eMS this skill will possibly become less useful. But for me Thrust is essential. With the low HP that we have being in a tight spot can mean quick death…and the quicker I get out of that tight spot the sooner I can run to safety and stay alive. Also faster movement will increase training speeds. You can look for a Free Market spot and not be slow about it. But the biggest Bonus is that since you have passive speed, you can turn all of your equips into damage focused instead of looking for specific speed related bows. I personally maxed this. I recommend at least 5 points go into Thrust.
Mortal Blow - Passive skill that replaces Bow Whacking with a high damage arrow that has a chance of causing instant death.
Fantastic skill. When maxed your character will rarely see bow whacking again. The activation % has been increased to 90%. A 250% Arrow it slams into the enemy can hit very high numbers. Also there is a 10% chance of killing the monster if it is below 50%HP. I recommend getting this to a high number. 5 points in this is needed to unlock Arrow Rain
Arrow Rain - AoE skill that hits 6 monsters around the character
Ah finally, we have a skill that can hit like those mages. Very flashy skill. Also for Maple story Europe purposes this is your most important skill in 3rd job. EMS is full of maps which are perfect for this skill. Getting from 72-90 becomes way too easy with this skill. Max this, you won’t regret it one bit.
Inferno - Horizontal Mob skill with a fire element
Works like Arrow Bomb, very similar except with a fire element, but with Arrow Bomb's impact damage removed the damage on neutral monsters is extremely similar . Hits all 6 monsters with 150% damage maxed. When used on fire weak monsters an elemental multiplier is added. Possibly one of the best mob skills in the game when used on fire weak. Unfortunately there are no fire weak maps worth training on. This skill makes Non Rangers look on in envy as this is one of the best “Looking” skills in the game. Inferno does not stun monsters, and can be used to lure in a much better way than Arrow Bomb. The usefulness of this skill is limited. Until we get decent fire weak enemies to train on.
Puppet - Aggro’s monsters so they attack the puppet instead of you.
Essential skill. Needs 5 points in it to unlock Hawk. This is a skill where if used properly will make you untouchable to most monsters. Has extremely high HP and can survive longer than it takes for you to kill the monsters. I recommend getting at least 12 points into this. Can save you from using lots of HP pots
Silver Hawk - Summons a bird which damages and stuns
The damage of the bird is weak, but the stun is vital. Gets extremely high stun % at early lvls. You need 15 points into this to unlock Phoenix in 4th Job. Only attacks 1 monster at a time. Useful for fighting monsters that can take lots of hits to kill or deal high damage. Can save you from using lots of HP pots.
Strafe - Shoots 4 arrows at a single target
4 Arrows in 1 shot. You’re best 1v1 skill until 4th job. Replaces Double Shot as your main damage skill. Also shoots much faster than Double Shot. Max This
Popular Stopping Points
Ranger skill builds are not really about how useful each skill is, it is all about when to stop putting points into the skills due to the next SP being less useful than they could be elsewhere.
I will try to go over some popular stopping points for each of the skills, assuming you do not wish to max and why.
The general idea is that Arrow Rain and Strafe are maxed, although some choose not to. The few exceptions is not enough for me to put them into this section. Especially considering Maplestory Europe does not have 4th job Yet.
Thrust
5 - 10 Passive speed is enough combined with other speed related options to get max speed thus allowing these points to go into another useful skill
10 - Tried to max it but the last 10 points of Thrust only give +1 speed compared to the +2 of the first 10
Mortal Blow
5 - Enough to unlock Arrow Rain, But you don’t see this skill as being very useful so you decide to go against adding further points.
11 - Combined with 0 Thrust allows you to max all the other skills in the Ranger Skillbook
Puppet
12 - Gives the puppet enough HP and TimeLimit for training at a fast pace. You don’t see the need for more points
18 - Maxed Timer, 5000 HP. Not much enemies will kill it before you kill the enemy. So you decide this is content for you.
Silver Hawk
15 - Required to unlock Phoenix. 90% Stun is more than enough.
21 - 95% Stun, An average of 1 miss every 15 minutes…Points are better spent elsewhere
28 - 98% Stun, 2 points for 1 % is a waste and you feel you could do better with the 2 points somewhere else
Inferno
1 - No maps where Inferno is actually useful, so you get 1 point for Looks and Luring purposes only.
11 - You were going to get 20 Thrust but the last 10 points were going too far, so they come here instead
21 - You prefer to put the last 9 Points to max Hawk/Mortal Blow/Your preferred skill
SKILL BUILDS
Ok this is a very highly debated topic, Every Ranger skill is amazing.. Not enough skill points to max them all. I will give you a couple of good options. But will not give a build for them all, since it is really down to personal taste in what you want to max before the others. First point should go into Strafe just for the fun factor. Using Double Shot for 70 lvls, time for a change.
These are the minimum points in each skill I would recommend
Strafe - 21
Arrow Rain - 28
Puppet - 12
Silver Hawk - 15
Mortal Blow - 11
Thrust - 0
Inferno - 1
I am willing to answer any questions on this if needed.
Here is your standard non thrust build
Strafe - 30
Arrow Rain - 30
Puppet 20
Silver Hawk - 30
Mortal Blow 20
Thrust - 0
Inferno - 21
Some people switch Hawk with Inferno and go 21 Hawk, 30 inferno. Again it is personal taste.
The problem I find with these builds is you don’t get the best of everything. Sometimes maxing can be a bit too much. No speed at all is quite disappointing for some. So taking points out of skills can be done effectively without losing a lot of damage.
Here is an example of a build where you can get the best of everything. (I made this one up on the spot as an example)
MIXED
Strafe - 30
Arrow Rain - 30
Puppet - 18
Silver Hawk - 21
Mortal Blow - 18
Thrust - 10
Inferno - 25
This gives you + 20 speed, a high damaging elemental attack, 95% stun hawk, a mortal blow that has high activation/damage and a puppet with 5000 hp.
Definitely a possible option without losing too much from certain skills.
But many today feel inferno is useless. No areas to train with it specifically and with Arrow Bomb being so similar, plus added stun.. Inferno gets used mainly to lure, which it can do at lvl 1. I agree with this. Although I would love to have inferno I have chosen to leave Inferno at lvl 1
Here is the build I have chosen
Max all but Inferno
Strafe - 30
Arrow Rain - 30
Puppet - 20
Mortal Blow - 20
Silver Hawk - 30
Thrust - 20
Inferno - 1
I do not recommend you follow this build unless you know exactly what you are doing. Although thrust is often underrated it can be overrated at times too. With Mounts and speed equips it is possible to reach max speed without Thrust. So please keep that in mind before choosing this build.
It is important to know when to stop, Maxing a skill straight away is not a very good idea as this will limit where you can train.
I advise getting your first main skill to 21 before starting on the second skill.
If you choose Arrow Rain first (which I recommend) 21 is the maximum range for the AoE so getting it further is less effective than starting strafe at the same lvl. Try to start Strafe around lvl 80 at latest so that when it comes to lvl 88 You have a good 1v1 Damage skill for if you want to join Viking Parties, this is a popular training map for lvl 9x Archers
Strafe or Arrow Rain First?
The maps in Maple Europe highly favour the Arrow Rain option . This version seems built for Arrow Rain.Straf first is very frustrating until lvl 85. But with Aqua Dungeon now available you will be able to go to Black Squids early with the strafe first build. Unfortunately they will take many hits to kill. Also since we do not yet have Leafre, strafe first is not supported with many options for maps.
Thats not to say Strafe or even Inferno first are no fun. Arrow rain is far superior EXP wise, But if you want to go hunt in El Nath with Inferno or check out Death Teddys with Strafe they are still fun and respectable options.
But since i chose Arrow Rain first i will go into detail on this decision.
Popular maps for Arrow Rain and Strafe first builds can be found in my training guide(link is up at the top of this guide)
Arrow Rain Build
70 - 1 Strafe
My own build is a bit confusing so let me tell you why each skill is where they are. First Arrow Rain = training at red nose den 2 72-late 8x
1 inferno = easy luring and eye candy for little rangers
Strafe was maxed in 8x ready for viking parties at lvl 88
Puppet 12 was so that it could actually tank some hits if i was in a tight spot and useful for gatekeepers. Also the timer was increased to a decent limit. Silver Hawk to 16 is 90% stun and is useful for ludi/aqua(extremely useful in aqua)
A bit of early thrust so that i can trade in my Icarus 2 for a PAC and still keep my speed.
Max out Arrow Rain now that wolf spiders were starting to become my main training area.
Max out puppet becuase it was my 2nd most used skill after Arrow Rain at wolf spiders.
Hawk to 21 for 95% stun.
Max Mortal Blow next because the other skills are all stopped at decent points and Mortal Blow is useful at vikings/high lvl areas
Get Thrust up to 10 so that i can trade in my Dark Arund and get a higher damage bow without loosing my speed
Max Silver Hawk for a much easier time in ludi/aqua
Max Thrust so that i have 130% base speed, enough to stop worrying about speed equips, have my own mini haste (with 15+ jump boots) and so that i can focus on damage equips always.
Equipments For 70+
Now that you are a Ranger you will want to have the best equipments possible for your lvl. Well some cost more than others. But lets go through them.
Bow - Ideally anything over 100 Attack is your goal. Costing 30m+. The higher attack the better. If your brand new on lvl 70 and still a little low on mesos then a 94+ Hinkel is a good starting option. This could cost around 5-15m. Speed Bows are higher in price but can add the last 10 speed to thrust Rich Players looking for an Arund should try and find something 105 Attack or higher
Gloves - Easiest way is to get yourself a pair of 10+ Atk Work Gloves . Anything below 10 Atk is a lot harder to sell on once you are finished with them. Could cost around 35m. Bowman gloves lvl 70+ Are a good option. Dark Eyes up to Arcina gloves give nice stat boosts and look nice too. Try to get 10 Atk on these also. If your poor then 8 Attack is fine and quite cheap. Rich players should go for 12+
Overall - At lvl 70 you can keep 100% Scrolling these if you are poor, otherwise play around with 10/60% Aim for 21+ Dex. Rich archers should be looking at 25+ Dex, popular items to scroll include Dark Pris , Dark Ades and Green Ades
Hat - Try to buy a Zakum Helmet if your guild does not already go on runs. 30 stats and very nice defence. Otherwise just a clean lvl 70+ Bowman hat or is good enough. Scroll for Accuracy or HP
Shoes - Ideally you are looking for 10 Dex (8 if you want green snow shoes). Scroll with Jump to get dex boosts. Put these together with Thrust if you chose it and you can have max haste forever. At lvl 80 Dark Wing Boots are more efficient than the 7 Slot Green Snowshoes. As the 5 dex is almost equivelent to the 2 slots using the best scrolls in eMS. But if you have a good pair you could keep them. Rich players should look for 12+ Dex
Cape - 8+ Dex for a nice cape. Icarus capes are still an option as the stat boosts are nice if you are going Non-Thrust. If possible try for a 10+ Dex Cape. Rich players should be looking to trade in their old cape and go for Pink Adventurer/Gaia Cape for attack boosts.
Earrings - An expensive upgrade, poorer players should try to go for 8 Dex as these are still respectable in eMS. The mp boost of Leaf Earrings prove popular until Fallen Leaf Earrings become more common. Although earring choice is mainly down to personal taste. Rich players should try to go for 10+Dex But be prepared to dish out 100m+
Tips For Rangers
Make friends with Priests and Dragon Knights. The support skills will come in handy at bosses and training maps. Training with other people is a good way to relax and have fun, enjoy the game. You will more than likely need the DK skill HyperBody to be able to participate in bosses such as Papulatus, Captain Latanica, and Zakum.
Be respectful to players who come into your map, I know it can sometimes be frustrating to see red dots always appear on your map. But if they aren’t killing anything then they aren’t doing anything wrong. Try not to bark out for them to “CC” or “Change Channel” before they even do anything…remember they could just be passing through.
Help lower lvl players. Remember you were once a low lvl too, it isn’t easy when you do not know the mechanics of the game.
If you lose motivation, try looking at other players as an influence, try to meet friends you can play with and lvl together. Or go show off you new skills. One of my favourites is placing puppet in Henesys to watch the lower lvls f6 and say “WHATS THAT??”
If anyone says your damage is weak, give them a Mortal Blow show and shoot a 250% Arrow into a monster
Make friends with other Rangers, get to know them and how they think.. It could help you make decisions of your own. Friendly advice will never be far away.
Take pride in your Ranger
SKILLS
 Maple Warrior = Core Skill ~ Maple Warrior 20 = Horned Tail
This skill raises your stats STR/DEX/INT/LUK by a certain %. Other than your 3 important skills, this one is the next in terms of raising your damage. With the bonus that it effects all your party. Maxing this after lvl 160 is a good idea, I say this because it is a party skill, and anyone can use it...so let someone else get this skill and then you can get Concentrate instead which is even more useful in its own way with the half mp usage and +26 atk.
 Sharp Eyes ~ Core Skill ~ Sharp Eyes 20 = Pianus, Shark, Cold Shark ~ Sharp Eyes 30 = Skellosaurus, Guild Quest, Pianus
What this skill does is increase your Critical hit chance and also your damage, This is the favourite out of all archer skills by many as it is a party skill (we wait the longest out of the classes to get a party skill, but it is worth it) Maxing this soon as possible is a good idea if you want to go on all those boss runs with your friends and guild. One of the 3 important skills to max first.
 Bow Expert ~ Core Skill ~ Bow Expert 20 = Papulatus ~ Bow Expert 30 = Zakum
This skill increases your minimum damage(like the one in 2nd job) but this time the increase goes up to 90% This will stabalise your damage once and for all. Also maxed this skill gives a nice 10 atk boost! This skill requires you to have maxed Bow Mastery in Hunter. one of the 3 important skills to max first
 Dragon's Breath ~ StoryBook = El Nath PQ | Dragon's Pulse 20 = Pianus, Jr Newtie | Dragon Pulse 30 = Pianus
This skills is useful to put 1 point into when you advance, it hits 4 monsters (6 when maxed) and knocks them back at a 100% rate. Extremely useful for mobbing. When maxed it also hits 100% damage
 Hurricane ~ 4th Job Advancement Quest ~ Hurricane 20 = Guild Quest, Jr Newtie ~ Hurricane 30 = Papulatus
The famous Bowmaster skill. This skill shoots 8.2 Arrows per second in a continuous rapid fire. Like a never ending strafe with arrows that shoot out double speed. This skill can pin bosses, wipe out mobs after a dragon breath one by one and will be your new #1 skill. Although you cannot jump shoot with this skill so there are still uses for strafe. Without sharp eyes this skill becomes more powerful than strafe at lvl 6 and paired with sharp eyes it outdamages strafe at lvl 1! Although its not high in damage, the speed is insane and the damage being as powerful as strafe means nobody should underestimate this skill. The start up time is next to nothing, especially with booster on...so you can even walk while shooting if you keep pressing it while walking. One of 3 important skills to max first
Concentrate ~ Story Book = Sharks ~ Concentrate 20 = Zakum, Concentrate 30 = Zakum, Horned Tail
(Coming soon ~ I havent unlocked it yet)
 Hamstring ~ Core Skill ~ Hamstring 20 = Skellosaurus Skelegon ~ Hamstring 30 = Skellosaurus Skelegon
Hamstring is a skill that doesnt need to be maxed until late on, which is a nice thing because it doesnt get useful until later on. This skill slows down an enemy by speed making them slow as snails. Paired with dragon breath and arrowbomb / inferno this skill is awesome. You can knockback the enemies and then hamstring will keep them slow so they wont ever get in reach of you to shoot at you (especially at skellegons where their attack is deadly). It can also be used on Zakum mobs to make them go slow too. A useful skill for people who use it properly
 Phoenix ~ Quest from Kumo in Leafre ~ Phoenix 20 = Skellosaurus Skelegon ~ Phoenix 30 = Manon
Phoenix is a fire based bird that does very high damage to 4 monsters and especially fire weak. Bonus with this bird is that it does not require summoning rocks. Although it does require you have lvl 15 Silver Hawk. Good for damage but occasionally less useful than its counter part due to no stun. Maxing this gives you a similar damage output to Concentrate over time considering Concentrate has a 4 minute cool down
SKILL BUILDS
120-150
4th Job skill builds are really your own choice...but i will give you some help on making the right choices. Lets start off with the rule of 1/11/21. This is where each of the mastery books begin a new phase.. These specific numbers give you more damage output for your money than any of the other lvls. So if you want to maximise your damage output a good goal is to go for all 3 skills 21/21/21 then max them. But ofcourse you wont want to do that because 1: getting some skill books is easier than getting others, and ofcourse 2: you will want to max sharp eyes to get into your zakum/horned tail runs
So a smart thing to do instead is Max out Sharp eyes and Hurricane first and leave BE at 11 until you finish maxing those others. Bow Expertise is a different one in terms of skill points too. It is more similar to Puppet in a sense that it only upgrades itself every 2 or 3 lvls. So you should try to put a whole lvls worth of points into Expert instead of 1 point at a time.
By lvl 150 you want to have maxed Sharp Eyes | Hurricane | Bow Expert as well as 1 point into Dragon's Breath for training purposes you will have 2 oither points that you can put into skills for fun.
150-180
now that you have your main skills maxed. You still have some skills left that can improve your damage. Not quite as effective as the 3 important ones you just maxed..but still very important.
First on the list is Concentrate, this gives you 26 atk aswell as Half your mp usage which is EXTREMELY useful for hurricane at bosses you need to pin. Although this skill has a 4 Minute cool down. This would be your best option 150-160 along with Maple Warrior this is a party skill that maxed can give you +10% of your base stats. So expect this to add a good 70-80 dex for you at lvl 150. This skill doesnt have a cool down but only gives you half the damage output as Concentrate. The cooldown however means both are quite equal in terms of dps on bosses. Your third skill is a choice would be Phoenix. When maxed you can expect this bird to be hitting over 12ks on neutral monsters for you, which is quite special when you will be killing the monsters fast anyway due to maxing concentrate and maple warrior. stun wont be as useful anymore and you will want to maximise your EXP so getting phoenix seems a good choice. Go to some fire weak monsters and you will see Phoenix shine with damage higher than 15ks on 4 monsters. Phoenix can also be used to clear bombs at both Papulatus and Pianus. DO NOT use it at Bodyguard A or Anego if you are pinning because this will cause monsters to spawn infront of you.
150-180
Dragon's Breath and Hamstring are all thats left, both are useful but only to a certain point. Dragon Breath would give you more knockback damage but since you kill monsters in 1 second its very limited, Hamstring is useful for slowing down the monsters but since you kill them in 1 second with Hurricane its pointless (this is why using mob skills can make hamstring alot more useful and slightly increase your dps at the same time) But the choice is yours. If you dont want to max any of these then maybe go back and max inferno.thrust if you missed them out.
End Game Equipments
These are the equipments you will want to keep forever or atleast equipments that you can be happy with keeping forever.
Bow - Most popular choices are between lvl90 Metus lvl100 Nisrock and lvl110 DragonShiner . Without hammer + maker skill you are aiming for 115/120/125+ atk respectively for the 3 in order.
Gloves - With the hammer out, getting high attack gloves is alot easier now, you should be aiming for atleast 13atk if you are low on mesos. anything above 15atk should last you a long time if not until the end of the game
Overall - As far as bowmen overalls go Blue Arzuna is your easy value for money as it gives 6 dex and 5 str(this 5 str can be used to get a higher lvl bow) and is easy dropped and requires little to create. But for true value of money you want a Timeless Evernew(maker skill) 9 dex 6 str, it levels up to produce higher stats and even levels up Hamstring by 1 at final lvl if your lucky, which is a better bonus than nothing :) Try to get your Overall at 30-35+ Dex. 35-40 if it is the Timeless, with Arzuna 30+ is fine.
Hat - During Ranger we spoke about the Zakum Helmet, this is still a valid and cheapest for money option. But With Magatia in ems you can bet Maker skill is just around the corner... with this you may want to swap your zakum helmet for this Timeless Rapido you can actually get similar str/dex using the maker skill to a zakum helmet. Not only that but at max lvl this can actually lvl up Sharp Eyes by 1 point! Which makes this very useful if you havent actually maxed the skill yet.
Shoes - Dark Wing Boots and Dark Ades Boots are the best options available in ems still. Anything above lvl 80 in shoes are genuinely good for end game. But you should go for 16+ dex atleast if you want to keep these. With maker you will want 20-25 dex. When Attack type boots do become released you may want to try your hand at Chaos Scrolling in order to get high attack shoes such as Facestompers .
Cape - Throw Away any cape that is not attack based and go for a Pink Adventurer Cape if you dont have one already. Use the Chaos Scroll to get the cape to atleast 6-8 Atk. Try your luck to scroll even more attack or go safe route and add dex. Be sure to use your hammer slots too
Earrings - Leaf and Fallen Leaf Earrings are still your best option. Try to get 13+ dex on them. Preferrably Fallen Leaf due to the HP boost
Pendant - Horus Eye is a very good option that can give you +3/4 stats 210 HP/MP with 2 possible hammers to make it 350 HP/MP which could help you on your way so you can survive and defeat HornTail and get you a Horned Tail Necklace which gives +7 stats and has the chance to improve with hammer
Frequently Asked Questions & Bits of Information
~ Strafe is the most MP-inefficient skill a third job Bowman has.
~ Arrow Bomb on a mob of 4 or less monsters does less than Iron Arrow does with the same number of monsters. However, Arrow Bomb does more damage on 5 or 6 monsters than Iron Arrow does.
~ Powerknockback can still useful in certain situations later on in the game.
~ Due to nexon continuing to release atk based equips i really reccomend you go for these equips and go higher base str so that yo ucan get the highest lvl bow possible. Thanks to our damage formula the difference between atk > dex ~ str is quite large. Atk should be main priority and adding a little str to get more atk is worth it.
~ Snowshoes have 7 slots instead of 5. But lvl 80+ boots have +5 dex on them already so thats the equivelent to almost 2 30% scrolls working which would be your 2 extra slots.
~ Is Final Attack worth it? not really, you save mp and can get free kills. But the amount it slows Arrow Bomb down makes it a definite no.
~ When the balance updates is patched onto EMS Arrow Bomb will be your strongest skill, beating hurricane by quite a bit. It may even be almost as strong as Inferno on fire weak
~ For Maker Skill you as a bowmaster you are going to be looking to get Diamonds, Dex Crystal, Dark Crystal and Power Crystal.
~ Although not needed, try to carry 1-2000 arrows with you in your inventory...if you get dispelled or you do not notice your skill runs out you will continue to fire until you can get back on your feet again. This is specially useful at bosses.
~ Hawk will become one of your closest trustworthy friends during your "grinds" as long as it is over 21.
~ Capping str between 60-90 is your goal. Depending on the bow you want to use, a metus or a nisrock can get away with around 60, but you may want to increase due to atk capes,shoes and many other items which can be scrolled for attack leaving you less options to get your str.
~ A good Bowmaster rarely needs to use HP potions because they are always killing monsters before getting hit, which means you don't really need
defense.
~ Bronze arrows arent really worth buying. But you can get +4 atk arrows from Showa Town
~ Thrust stacks with Haste or any other speed triggering effect. But you shouldnt need to worry about that ever again if you max it. Since overalls and Bows also give off speed to get your final 10 speed.
~ Puppet has much higher defense than a mapler. Something doing 1000 damage to you could only be doing 100-500 to puppet. Use it as a tank as well as a distraction.
Nifty guide. Explains a lot and shows all the skills. The 'Arrow rain must' thing was a bit... Odd to read though. Some people find it much more fun to have strafe, but I guess it doesn't matter really. Metuz wrote:Make friends with other Rangers, get to know them and how they think.. Thanks for the feedback. Its always better to have someone else read it over for things i missed. I didn't realise that it came across like that.
Just a suggestion putting up... my hunter is only lvl 54 now, so if my vision of 3rd job skills is wrong, correct me ;)
well then, how about this set up for a build 2nd job:
20 mastery
20 bow booster
30 arrow bomb
20 power knock back (great for monster pulling at ie. cars and then killing with arrow bomb)
13 soul arrow (for 390 sec of effect. about twice the time of booster, nice timing)
18 final attack (little more than once every 3 arrows will be send an extra with almost double dmg)
this will be great with a follow up build or 3rd job beginning with arrow rain, as this get's you additional dmg when using double shot, means a better dmg till you get to the level where you can add to strife. Besides this it will be usefull till the point where you finally usefully can use arrow rain. And in the end, does the 11 extra avoid (from otherwise focus) help that much?
or make it even like this:
20 mastery
20 bow booster
30 arrow bomb
20 power knock back
7 soul arrow ( 210 sec = 1x booster, you already have to renew skill, so why not one extra?)
24 final attack (48%, 220% dmg)
this get's about half your arrows with an extra one at more than double the dmg... great grinding ^^
Great Job, extremely useful guide  . But maybe you should include as an alternative to a DEX cape a STR cape. Cheaper and more common than DEX capes, having one helps capping your STR early on.
